Blessing of the Beasts

The Golden Calf, and the Reign of God

In Exodus we read of weary, freightened people who traded their gold, and the promises of God's protection for a 'god' they could see.  An yet God did not abandon the.  In Matthew we read the parable of the outraged king who rants at the wedding guest who did not grovel and kiss the kings feet, and pay due respect by putting on a proper robe.   The King stunned guest trussed up like a turkey and tossed out into the outter darkness.

It may be so with the world, but not so in the Reign of God.  The only binding in the Kingdom of Heaven are bindings made of love, bonds of affection, and friendship and faithfulness. Oh we can make other bindings; bindings of judgment and anger and self righteousness.

We can create any number of Golden Calves that reflect well on us and badly on those other people. But those are not of God’s doing. So let us give thanks for the Abundance of God’s blessings, blessings poured out on all flesh (canine, feline, mustelidae and boas and humanoid) and let us come to God’s love feast until the goodness in us is polished and shines brighter than our anxiety and our fears. Amen.
